Effects of Massage on Circulation: Increased blood flow on a local level is achieved by compression of tissues, which empties venous beds, lowers venous pressure, and increases capillary blood flow, which is quickly counteracted by autoregulation. Massage stimulates the release of vasodilators, especially histamine. Blood flow changes also may be induced through the autonomic vascular reflexes. This particular increase in blood flow has a body-wide effect. Compression against arteries mechanically influences the internal pressure receptors in the arteries. It seems that there is no way to avoid affecting the blood and lymph circulations by giving a massage. Massage and other forms of bodywork mimic and assist the pumping action of the muscle and respiratory pump.
